Professor Getnet Tadele High School

Located in Azena, about 150 kilometres southwest of Bahir Dar, Professor Getnet Tadele High School (PGTHS) is named after the first person from Azena to attend university — Professor Getnet Tadele, a long-time Partners volunteer and advisor on research and resource mobilization.

The project was initiated and largely funded by the community, which contributed 75% of total costs and donated six hectares of land for construction, green outdoor classrooms, educational gardens, water access, and recreational spaces. Officially inaugurated in October 2022, the school features 16 classrooms, a library, science and ICT laboratories, an administration block with a first-aid space, separate latrines, and a menstrual hygiene management room for female students and staff.

PGTHS opened with 815 ninth-grade students (46% girls) and 44 teachers, supplied and paid by the district education office. Beyond improving access to quality secondary education for students from low-income families, the project also generated six months of employment for 55 local workers, 60% of them women. Since opening, Partners has continued to support the school through teacher training, school greening initiatives, hygiene and sanitation programs, and health awareness workshops, ensuring lasting educational and community impact.
