From Secrecy to Confidence: The End of the Yellow Card
For years, girls used a quiet system to manage menstruation. A “yellow card,” introduced by the girls’ club, allowed them to leave class or go home without needing to explain. Fear of embarrassment kept them from speaking openly. Many missed several days of school each month.
That is no longer the case. Through the PiEE SPLASH WISE project, the entire school community, teachers and students, has taken part in awareness sessions on menstrual health. The stigma has faded, and open conversation has taken its place.
Today, the yellow card is no longer needed. Girls now speak with confidence. They ask for what they need and receive it without hesitation. A fully equipped Menstrual Hygiene Management room is now available, offering a space to rest and return to class without disruption.
This shift has led to better attendance, stronger confidence, and a more supportive learning environment.
The PiEE SPLASH WISE project continues to promote dignity and inclusion in every classroom.
