Meskerem 16 Pre-Primary School Upgrade

In one of the most overcrowded neighborhoods of Bahir Dar, the pre-primary program at Meskerem 16 School consisted of cramped, mud-walled rooms. Enrollment had grown by nearly 150% in the past two years, resulting in an average of 74 preschoolers in each classroom. With no playground, inadequate latrines, and no accessible facilities, the environment fell short of what young children need to learn, play, and feel safe.

In 2025, Partners in Education Ethiopia, working closely with the Bahir Dar Education Department, the Kebele 7 community, and Meskerem 16 School, began a full reconstruction of the pre-primary program. The new preschool features spacious, well-ventilated classrooms that support play-based learning, a dedicated preschool latrine block with showers and handwashing stations, and safe outdoor areas where children can explore, socialize, and grow. One classroom was designed as a special needs unit, enabling 18 children with disabilities from the community to access pre-primary education for the first time. The project also provides age-appropriate books, Montessori materials and other school supplies, and all teachers receive training and coaching to strengthen instructional quality.

Classes began in September 2025 with 759 preschoolers, children now provided with the opportunity to enjoy quality early education, laying a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

“I like my new classroom. We play, read books, and wash our hands. I feel happy coming to school every day.” Pre-Primary Student, Meskerem 16 School
