Biruh Tesfa Pre-Primary School Upgrade

For many years, the pre-primary program at Biruh Tesfa Primary School in Debre Birhan operated in cramped, dark, mud-walled classrooms built by the community.  The poor conditions and lack of learning materials made early learning very difficult for 4- to 6-year-old children at a critical stage of their development.

In 2025, Partners in Education Ethiopia, working closely with the Debre Birhan Education Department, Debre Birhan Teacher Education College, and the Emiye Minilik community committee, constructed a new preschool. The facility now has three classroom blocks, each with four spacious classrooms, designed to support play-based learning and active engagement. The school also has accessible facilities and resources for children with disabilities, ensuring that all children can learn with dignity and appropriate support.

Teachers from both pre-primary and primary levels received training and coaching to strengthen instructional quality and early learning outcomes. Students also benefited from WASH and gender-awareness activities through newly established School WASH and Gender Clubs, helping children develop healthy habits and inclusive values from an early age. The construction process created employment opportunities for the local community, strengthening community ownership and pride.

Classes began in September 2025 with 360 preschoolers, and the school celebrated its inauguration the following month. Today, Biruh Tesfa’s youngest learners are starting their education journey in bright, welcoming classrooms that support learning, play, and well-being, demonstrating the power of collaborative, community-driven development.

“Teaching in this new environment has completely changed how children engage. They are more confident, more curious, and eager to participate. We now have the space and tools to teach the way young children truly need.”Pre-Primary Teacher, Biruh Tesfa Primary School
