Celebrating Progress in Pediatric Eye Health in Ethiopia
We were pleased to join the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) for a national dissemination workshop highlighting the achievements, lessons, and impact of pediatric eye health initiatives in Ethiopia. The workshop reflected on the Bright Eyes Early Project, implemented by Partners in Education Ethiopia (PiEE) with financial and technical support from CHAI, alongside discussions on other CHAI-supported initiatives, including Eyeglasses for Addis Kids and the School Eye Health Pilot Projects. Through the Bright Eyes Early Project, PiEE screened more than 72,000 children aged 4–6 across 271 public and private pre-primary schools and four IDP centers in Bahir Dar, Debre Birhan, and Gondar. The screening identified 3,359 children with diagnosable eye conditions requiring further attention and care. More than 1,150 pairs of spectacles were provided to children with identified vision needs, helping them see more clearly and participate more fully in learning and everyday life.
The workshop brought together representatives from CHAI, PiEE, city administrations, regional and zonal education and health offices, the Ethiopian Optometrists Association, NGOs, and other eye-health partners. It created an important space to reflect on progress, share lessons and field experiences, and discuss what is needed to strengthen pediatric health services.
The discussions also looked ahead exploring how government, communities, and partners can build on these achievements, strengthen awareness and early identification, and sustainably expand access to quality eye care for more children.
