The Story of Yabibal
Yabibal is 13 years old and a student at Bezawit Primary School in Bahir Dar, Amhara Region. Bright and hardworking, he once faced a challenge that threatened not only his learning, but also his confidence.
A growing cataract gradually stole his sight. Reading became difficult. Exams felt overwhelming. At school, he was exposed to stigma because of his vision problem. Determined to help himself, Yabibal tried to save money for surgery by selling traditional chewing sticks. But like many children in low-income families, the little he earned was needed for daily survival. His dream of treatment slipped further away.
Everything changed when Partners in Education Ethiopia conducted a school-based eye screening in collaboration with Tibebe Ghion Specialized Hospital. Yabibal was identified, diagnosed, and referred for free cataract surgery at Dr. Abdu Private Specialty Clinic, with support from Operation Eyesight and partners.
Today, Yabibal’s sight has been restored. He is back in the classroom reading, learning, and smiling with renewed confidence and hope.
When a child is given the chance to see, they are given the chance to learn, to grow, and to dream.
