Hayat’s Story: A Clearer Path to Learning

Hayat Yenus, an 11-year-old first-grade student at Sebatamit School in Bahir Dar, was born with her twin brother. Shortly after birth, she developed vision problems and underwent surgery at Gondar Hospital. Though follow-up care was advised, her family couldn’t afford the return visit due to financial challenges.

“We knew she struggled to see distant things,” her father, Mr. Yenus, shared. “But we had no means to get her treated. She failed first grade twice, and we began losing hope.”

Hope returned when Partners in Education Ethiopia, in partnership with Operation Eyesight, screened students at her school. Hayat was referred to Tibebe Ghion Hospital in Bahir Dar and diagnosed with a correctable refractive error. Within days, she received custom eyeglasses.

Returning home with her new glasses, Hayat beamed, “Father, now I can see clearly!” Her father replied joyfully, “Thank Allah! Now you can study and succeed.”

Overwhelmed with gratitude, Mr. Yenus said, “Thank you for changing our lives. May Allah bless you all
