Named after the nearby crater lake, Zengena Haik High School (ZHHS) is located about 145 kilometres south of Bahir Dar, in Kessa Chawusa Kebele, Banja Woreda, Awi Zone. It is the fifth high school built by Partners in collaboration with local communities, which contributed 75% of total project costs and donated 10 hectares of land for construction.
Before the project, students from Kessa and surrounding areas had to travel long distances or relocate to urban centres to continue their education beyond primary school — an option most families could not afford. As a result of such typical remoteness, only 42% of Ethiopian children make the transition from primary to secondary education, according to the Ministry of Ethiopia's Educational Statistics Annual Abstract from 2020/2021. ZHHS addresses this gap by giving students (especially girls) the opportunity to access quality high school education close to home while remaining with their families.
Construction began in February 2023 and was completed in August 2023, followed by the school’s official opening in September for the 2023/24 academic year. The new facilities include 12 classrooms, a library, science and ICT laboratories, separate latrines for boys and girls, and a menstrual hygiene management room. The project has already become a source of local pride, symbolizing what community-driven education can achieve when opportunity meets collaboration.
