Motta Pre-Primary & Primary School
Located in the Awi Zone, southwest of Bahir Dar, Motta Pre-Primary & Primary School (MPS) serves a rural community of over 3,400 residents who rely on subsistence farming. Before Partners’s involvement, students learned in dark, crumbling mud-walled classrooms with no latrines, playground, or access to clean water. The school also lacked a library, science lab, and proper desks — conditions that made safe, quality learning nearly impossible.
Funded entirely by a single donor foundation, the new project has transformed MPS into a safe and inspiring place to learn. The initiative includes 12 modern classrooms, a library, science lab, and separate latrines for boys and girls, as well as new student desks and reliable access to clean drinking water.
The school now provides education through grades 5–8, with ongoing teacher training, professional mentorship, and school greening projects that make the campus both attractive and sustainable. The result is a stronger, more inclusive learning environment that honours the vision of the late Mokonnen Hassen, a local champion for children’s education.
