Merawi Primary School

Merawi Primary School was opened in 1950 with 35 students; the school now has 2,395 students, including 21 with special educational needs. To cope with the rapidly growing population, parents built classrooms from cheap and locally available materials. As a result, students were learning in falling down classrooms and in classes with an average of 67 students. Because of lack of in-service and poor pre-service training, teachers largely employ teacher-centered methods, and students’ achievement in standardized tests has been very poor. Merawi is being implemented in partnership with the Merawi community and Bahir Dar University.

Progress

Construction of 24 new classrooms, an admin block with a teacher resource centre, offices and IT room, a library and science laboratory was completed in 2021. In addition, with the help of ISEE-urk, a bountiful special needs classroom was set up. Live fencing and educational gardening works have begun, involving students, parents and experts from the local agricultural office.
