Originally opened in 1950 with just 35 students, Merawi Pre-Primary & Primary School now serves 2,395 children, including 21 with additional support needs. Before Partners’s involvement, classrooms were overcrowded and unsafe, averaging 67 students per class, and most teachers lacked access to modern training or resources.
In partnership with the Merawi community and Bahir Dar University, Partners rebuilt the school in 2021, adding 24 new classrooms, a library, science lab, and an administration block with a teacher resource centre and IT room. A dedicated additional support needs classroom, supported by ISEE-urk, now provides inclusive learning opportunities for students with diverse needs.
Students, parents, and local agricultural experts have also launched live fencing and educational gardening projects, creating a vibrant, hands-on learning environment that strengthens both the school and its community.
